Mount Athos
Known as The Garden of Panaghia
Mount Athos known as the 'Holy Mountain' is under the direct spiritual leadership of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. An Orthodox spiritual centre since 8th century, Mount Athos has enjoyed an autonomous statute since the Roman Empire (Byzantine) times. The 'Holy Mountain', which is, is also a recognized artistic site, a site of major innovation, and as an organic and sustainable environmental center. The layout of the 20 monasteries, 13 sketes, as well as dozens of hermitages has an influence as far afield as Russia and the United States, and its school of painting influenced the history of Orthodox art.
