His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has been affectionately called “The Green Patriarch” in recognition of his global reputation as a leader promoting care of God’s creation. Accordingly, with the blessing of Metropolitan Methodios, the annual New England Archon Retreat will have the theme of “Greening the Parish: Answering the Green Patriarch’s Call.” The Retreat is being organized by Regional Commanders Dr. Aristotle Papanikolaou and Drake G. Behrakis and will be held via Zoom on Monday, April 19 at 7PM EDT. The featured speaker is Rev. Protopresbyter Nicolas Kazarian, Ecumenical Officer for Inter-Orthodox Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Father Nicolas will speak about the Ecumenical Patriarch’s work on environmental issues, along with the new initiative of the Archdiocese of America to green the parishes. In January 2021, the Department of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations began a four-part webinar series on Greening the Parish, featuring conversations between expert panelists on what it means to be a steward of creation through the lens of our Orthodox Christian theology, best practices, and daily action. This will also be the focus of the Retreat.

Rev. Protopresbyter Nicolas Kazarian was born in France; he has an undergraduate degree from the Institute of Orthodox Theology Saint Serge in Paris, and continued his studies at the Universities of Cyprus in Nicosia, and Thessaloniki in Greece, before moving to Switzerland to start an MA in Orthodox Theology at the Orthodox Theological Institute of Chambésy. He completed his Ph.D. at the Sorbonne. He is the author of numerous publications about the Orthodox Church, ecumenical dialogue, interfaith relations and geopolitics in various languages. Along with his work as Ecumenical Officer and Director of the Department on Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations, he is the parish priest of St. Eleftherios Greek Orthodox Church in Manhattan.

COVID-19 has lowered global carbon emissions; but it hasn’t slowed climate change. Our response to COVID-19 has precipitated the discovery of a vaccine; but it has left the world with a staggering number of deaths.

The pandemic has permanently affected our planet and altered our lives; but what are the lessons that we have learned? What has been the impact on nature and the environment? What have been the implications for healthcare? And what have we understood about the relevance and importance of science?

Listen to and interact with a distinguished group of panelists and presenters, including His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Metropolitan John of Pergamon, Prof. Katharine Hayhoe and Dr. Sotiris Tsiodras, as well as Bill McKibben and Dr. Nadia Abuelezam.

OPAC

Motivated by the lack of a structured and effective response to the seizure of Hagia Sophia. Understanding that this seizure is emblematic of the persecution of Christians around the globe, we choose to provide public advocacy for the global Orthodox Christian Church, and to promote, support, defend and champion Christian communities worldwide in the face of persecution, exclusion, and prejudice.

The Green Patriarch
By John Chryssavgis

No other church leader has been so recognized for his leadership and initiatives in confronting the theological, ethical and practical imperative of environmental issues in our time as the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. He has long placed the environment at the head of his church's agenda, earning him numerous awards and the title ‘Green Patriarch'. This paper describes the work of Patriarch Bartholomew for the protection of the natural environment, and especially for significant water bodies of the planet. This work has been done first in his own church, and subsequently in the wider society through international, inter-religious, and interdisciplinary gatherings that have gained the attention of policymakers and the mass media. The paper contains various insights into the Orthodox Christian worldview that direct the vision and activities of the Patriarch.

We worship as a community, not as individuals; so a liturgical ethos is also one of sharing. Long before the earth was seen as a whole from space, the Church knew that we stand before God together, and that we hold in common the earthly blessings that He has given to mankind and all creatures.

Saint John Chrysostom reminds us.
 "Not to share our own wealth with the poor
is theft from the poor and deprivation of their means of life;
we do not possess our own wealth but theirs,"
